This unit uses three pieces of literature: What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? directed by Lasse Halstrom, One Child by Torey Hayden and "Concrete Angel" by Martina McBride.
Research project
Part of this unit is learning how to synthesize information from several sites. A goal I have is to raise your awareness of various learning disabilities. Download the instruction sheet here for this project. You can find the rubric for the presentation here.
Lost your vocabulary words? No problem. Download another copy. Need the second list? Download it here.
End of unit activity:
Both One Child and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? deal with overcoming disabilities of many sorts. After watching the movie and reading the book, mark the chart below and fill out the Venn diagram to compare and contrast the characters of these two works.
1) After viewing the movie, think about the character’s emotional, physical and mental status in the film. Then put a checkmark in the appropriate box for that character’s problem throughout the story.
